Background of the Study
Storytelling has long served as a dynamic medium for transmitting indigenous knowledge in Ikire, where oral traditions encapsulate history, moral lessons, and cultural values. This method, passed down through generations, is central to preserving communal wisdom and fostering intergenerational dialogue. Traditionally, elders used narrative art to educate the young about social norms, ethical conduct, and ancestral heritage. However, the advent of digital media and modern educational systems has challenged the prevalence of traditional storytelling. Recent studies reveal that while modern media offer new communication avenues, the emotional and cultural depth of oral storytelling remains unmatched (Adeyemi, 2023; Bello, 2024). This research investigates the continuing relevance of storytelling as an indigenous knowledge transmission tool and its potential integration with contemporary education (Olajide, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Indigenous storytelling in Ikire is declining as modern media and formal education overshadow traditional oral narratives. This shift risks losing valuable cultural wisdom and ancestral knowledge, creating a gap in the transmission of indigenous heritage. The diminished practice of storytelling could result in the erosion of community values and historical continuity. Despite its cultural importance, there is limited research on how storytelling can be revitalized or integrated with modern educational methods. This study addresses the need to assess the effectiveness of storytelling as a medium for indigenous knowledge transmission and to identify ways to sustain its practice.
